The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating the sudden shutdown of a Clifton Park payroll company which affected thousands of small business employees in the Capital Region and nationwide.

The FBI's Albany bureau tweeted Wednesday that it's "seeking information from business owners who may have suffered financial loss due to the alleged activity" of MyPayrollHR, which closed suddenly last Thursday.

MyPayrollHR told its clients that they'd need to find alternative methods to pay employees. Soon after, a California-based financial services company that worked with MyPayrollHR began withdrawing paychecks once, and in some cases twice from employee bank accounts who received deposits from MyPayRollHR. This left employees with low or even negative bank balances.
