UTICA, N.Y. -- A partial verdict was reached in a case of an Oneida County man accused of murder.

Ricky Woods was accused of shooting Jamal Mathis to death on Leeds Street in Utica back in 2015. Woods was 18 at the time of the shooting.

On Monday, the jury deliberated for most of the day before telling the judge they were hopelessly deadlocked on the second degree murder charge, but were able to reach a verdict on the three weapons possession charges against him. The jury found Woods not guilty on those weapons counts.

Woods' attorney says they were relieved by the jury's decision.

"There's been a lot of turmoil and drama throughout the entire proceedings, so he's very tired and he was very pleased with the result, obviously, and I think we have to regroup and start getting ready to move on to the next stage of events," said defense attorney Devin Garramone.

District Attorney Scott McNamara says the office hasn't decided if the case will be retried. He says there are several factors to consider.

Woods was tried earlier this year on attempted murder and kidnapping charges, of which he was found guilty. He has not been sentenced on those charges yet.
