U.S. Rep. Tom Reed resigned from Congress on Tuesday after previously passing on a bid for another term representing the Southern Tier in the U.S. House of Representatives.

"After almost 12 years in Congress, today is my last day," the Republican congressman said on the House floor.

Reed will join the Prime Policy Group, a government relations and public affairs firm in Washington, D.C, where he will serve as vice chairman.

Reed has represented New York's 23rd District since 2010 and served as a co-chair of the influential Problem Solvers' Caucus. He was viewed as one of the chamber's more moderate members. In recent years, he was floated as a possible candidate for governor in 2022, but announced in March 2021 that he would not run for re-election or seek another office after being accused of sexual misconduct.

"It is time for petty political posturing to end. Leadership must emerge," Reed said in his farewell remarks.
