New Syracuse lacrosse coach Gary Gait has apparently made his first significant move since taking the reins at his alma mater, hiring former Johns Hopkins All-American defenseman and head coach Dave Pietramala to become his new defensive coordinator.

"Petro" confirmed the move via Twitter on Monday afternoon.

Pietramala and Hopkins parted ways in 2020 after he'd guided the Blue Jays to NCAA championships in 2005 and 2007, while also losing in the title game to Syracuse in 2008.

He and Gait squared off several times during their college days, but since then have become good friends, according to Gait.

Pietramala helped Hopkins win the 1987 championship in his freshman season, and he's the only person ever to win a lacrosse title as both a player and head coach.

Inside Lacrosse was the first to report the hiring, while John Johnson of Spectrum News 1 also confirmed the news through unnamed sources.

SU has yet to officially announce the hiring, which would appear to displace Leland Rogers, who's coached the Syracuse defense since 2008.

Pietramala inherits a defense that ranked among the worst in the nation last season, allowing 18 or more goals five times in 2021.
