WATERTOWN, N.Y. — It's a distinction that might be tough to swallow.

Watertown is being called the "drunkest" city in New York State.

"I don't know that I would be surprised but I don't see the binge drinking being — that we're the only ones," said Anchor Recovery Center of NNY Director Wanda Holtz.

It's according to 24/7 Wall Street, which examined data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to determine the cities in the nation with the highest levels of binge drinking. According to the findings, approximately 22 percent of adults in Watertown report binge drinking or drinking heavily.

"It pretty much comes down to the demographics. The fact that we have Fort Drum in our area which has a high percentage of people between the ages of 18 to 25- a much higher percentage anywhere else in the state- that's probably the primary reason," said Bill Bowman, executive director of Pivot, a drug and alcohol abuse prevention organization.

According to the CDC, binge drinking is most common for younger people between the ages of 18 to 34. The CDC also reports that binge drinking has many risks- including alcohol poisoning and car crashes.

As for prevention of binge drinking, Bowman says it needs to start with education.

"Really pointing out the consequences and pointing out the fact that people can make healthier choices is really what we try to do," said Bowman.

And for those in need of help, there are resources all around.

"People don't turn you away which is new and kind of refreshing to be honest," said Holtz.
