NEW HANOVER COUNTY, N.C. — Businesses in New Hanover County face more restrictions than the rest of the state as the world battles the spread of COVID-19.

A statement from New Hanover County government Saturday said it orders the closure of “non-essential retail, including indoor or outdoor shopping malls, and retail facilities that do not provide goods that are essential for health, sustenance, shelter, mobility, and hygiene.”

It continued: “Closure of specific merchants, like: auto dealerships, boat dealerships, and other motor vehicle sales points (not including repair or maintenance services).

Owners at Carolina Coast Harley Davidson in Wilmington said much of the staff is now laid off and sales staff will not be on the floor until further notice.

“We definitely are needed by some, we’re just not needed by all,” said Janice Noyes, co-owner. “We do have customers who, their motorcycle is their only mode of transportation, so they rely on our service, parts, and service departments.”

Noyes said the store will continue with limited business hours and with an emphasis on repair and maintenance service rather than sales.

New Hanover County is also closing all hotels, motels, and short-term rentals. These businesses can request an exception if they are housing medical staff who do not want to risk taking any germs home to their family. These restrictions will be in place, at least, until April 15 at 5 p.m.
