WILMINGTON, N.C. -- A drug overdose and heat is being blamed for the death of a man and his dog in Wilmington.

  • A man and a dog were found dead in a car near a Wilmington Petco. 
  • The man is thought to have died from an overdose.
  • The dog is thought to have died from extreme heat exposure. 

Police say a 28-year-old Burgaw man was found dead in a car around 7:30 Friday morning near the Petco off South College Road.

Also in the car was a deceased dog, thought to have been a Mastiff. 

Drugs, needles, and other paraphernalia were also discovered inside the vehicle. 

Police believe the man died from a drug overdose and the dog died from extreme heat exposure.

The man's identity has not been released at this time.
