CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A store owner who police say shot and killed an intruder is facing charges in the case.

  • Store owner Alan Corder is charged with voluntary manslaughter
  • The burglar's body was found behind the business
  • Officers say Corder saw someone break in his store on surveillance video

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers arrested store owner Alan Corder, 49, at American Beauty Garden Center. Officers say he is charged with voluntary manslaughter after he shot and killed the burglar in front of the business.

Corder called 911 to report that he saw someone shatter the front glass and break into the store while watching the surveillance camera from home.

Police later learned in their investigation that Corder drove to the store and shot and killed 20-year-old Justin Anderson as he was running out the business.

Officers responding to the scene later found Anderson behind the store.

Former Union County District Attorney John Snyder, who is not associated with this case, explained why Corder was charged.

He says that Corder’s actions showed a reckless disregard for another human being.
