WILMINGTON, N.C.-- The hit Netflix series Tidying Up with Marie Kondo has folks all over de-cluttering their closets and their lives.

  • Many are choosing to de-clutter since Marie Kondo's Netflix series came out
  • Staff members at one consignment shop say they have seen an increase in the amount people are bringing in
  • Kondo also has a book out with all of the information you need to de-clutter your closet and your life

Plato's Closet in Wilmington is feeling the effects of the show. They have had a rapid increase in the amount of items people have been bringing in.

Staff says the beginning of the new year is always busy. However, they are noticing people are having a new reason for coming in.

"They've mentioned they have been watching the show on Netflix, and it has really kind of inspired them to de-clutter their own lives and bring in their own clothes," Plato's closet employee, Octavia Henry, says. "I feel like 50 percent of the people that come in here mention the show or bring in stuff because it has become very popular," she added.

Staff says that they have seen people of all ages come in, but the majority has been college students.

One of those students, Liz Sawyer, says, "Living in student housing I realized that I had a ton of stuff that was cluttering my entire apartment, so I started out with clothes, and I am going to start moving through my apartment."

Sawyer says her motivation has even sparked a trend among her apartment.

"I have gotten all of my roommates hooked on this show- so now from our kitchen to even our laundry room to just our common living area we have cleaned out our desks, under our TV, and just old things that we don't need anymore" she says.

If you do not have a Netflix account, don't worry. Kondo also has a book out with all of the information you need to de-clutter your closet and your life.
