GASTON COUNTY, N.C. -- A teenager is dead after she and two friends went for a swim in the South Fork River. Crews recovered her body on Tuesday.

  • Officials say three teenage girls had been swimming in the river near the dam.
  • Two of them were immediately located and brought to safety. Both were uninjured.
  • The third's body was found on Tuesday

Officials say indications are that the teen from Lincolnton slipped and fell into the water when she drowned. Police believe the identity of the 16 year old is Makenna Warlick, but still have to make an official identification.

Emergency crews lowered water levels in an attempt to recover the teen's body, but lightning knocked out power to the pump they were using Monday night. Then, a storm swept through the area, raising water levels once again.

Officials say three teenage girls had been swimming in the river near the dam just before 4 p.m. The area they were at is popular for swimmers, but is off limits to the public due to it being treacherous and dangerous. Two of them were immediately located and brought to safety. Both were uninjured. Just weeks ago, Ethan Britt's body was recovered from the same river.

Recovery efforts continue as the Gaston County Police Department is investigating the incident.
