CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Folks are wondering what will happen next following a student's belief she found Silent Sam. This comes after a year of secrecy as the Confederate statue was brought down by protesters last year.

It was then taken away and hidden by the university during the tenure of former Chancellor Carol Folt.

UNC journalism major Charlotte Ix took pictures at a storage site on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard at Carolina North.   That's where she thinks the statue is under a brown tarp, laying on its back with its rifle in the air.  Police were patrolling the area when we arrived.

"I don't know how I feel about it being found. I don't know how I feel about what should happen to it but I think I'm glad that it was taken down and just that it’s a symbol of this university is open to everyone,” said student Darci Anderson.

A decision was supposed to be made on the statue earlier this year, but was postponed.  We reached out to the university for comment.  A spokesperson said: “For security reasons, we are unable to discuss the location of the monument."
