WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – State partners of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development are urging landlords to hold off on evictions.

The City of Winston-Salem Human Relations Department has received dozens of calls from tenants facing evictions, they say are based on profiling. It is advising landlords to be mindful that fair housing laws are still in full effect.

"And should not be discriminating against people based on the seven protected classes of race, color, national origin, familial status, gender, religion, or disability,” said Wanda Allen-Abraha, the human relations director for the City of Winston-Salem

North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Cheri Beasley issued an order postponing court proceedings until June 1. The order prevents landlords from filing evictions.
