Chef Crissy Faison launched LeanBack Soul Food LLC in 2016. She’s always had a knack for cooking, but wanted to create opportunities for disadvantaged women, women of color and those interested in the culinary arts.

In July, Faison launched a program to teach children ages 6 through 13 the foundations of cooking with the LeanBack Kidz Cooking Club.

“I’m just glad that I finally figured out what I wanted to do, and that I can help somebody else get there, because I know what it’s been like not knowing or just living life day-to-day,” Faison said.

Nash Dillard and Charlie Whitley, both 11, have been learning a lot of how to cook a meal. Participating in the program has inspired a new passion.

“I like making the food a lot, because it’s cool to enjoy the process,” Whitley said.

They hope to flex some of their skills while helping their families with their Thanksgiving feasts.

“I’m a little nervous because I’ve only ever made mashed potatoes before,” Dillard said.

Faison organizes the LeanBack GiveBack Thanksgiving Affair annually. Starting in 2019, Faison and her LeanBack team set up in Winston-Salem’s Bailey Park to offer a soul food spread to the community. The third annual event was held on Nov. 13.

“It does feel good. I’m not done, there’s still more to do, a whole lot more to do,” Faison said.

Faison hopes to grow her business to offer resources, an entrepreneurship program and catering services. For more information, click here
