CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A deputy with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office is recovering after being shot in northeast Charlotte.

The sheriff's office says Deputy Dijon Whyms underwent surgery Monday morning for injuries sustained during a shootout Saturday afternoon.

"The surgery went well and he is now in recovery," read a statement from the sheriff's office Monday. "We are grateful to CMPD for providing a Peer Support Group this afternoon for MCSO deputies and staff as needed. Thank you for your thoughts and consideration."

Whyms reportedly pulled the suspect, Aiden Bryant, over on Salmone Church Road around 4 p.m. Saturday. Officials say Bryant shot the deputy several times and Whyms fired back, hitting Bryant.

They were both taken to the hospital. Bryant was placed in custody at the hospital. Deputies say Bryant will be charged with possession of a stolen firearm, assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm and attempted first degree murder. Bryant has an unrelated warrant in Scotland County for larceny of a firearm and possession of a stolen firearm, according to the department.

Whyms has been a deputy with the sheriff's office since 2002, officials said.

The case is still under investigation.
