CINCINNATI — Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval and members of Cincinnati City Council will announce on Tuesday a resolution to declare gun violence a public health emergency.

The resolution has been co-sponsored by all nine members of City Council, which all but assures its passage. The Climate, Environment and Infrastructure Committee will consider the motion at a meeting on Tuesday before it goes for a vote of Council on Wednesday. 

The proposed resolution, which was released by city officials on Friday, includes figures showing how gun violence affects the health and well-being of the city. In 2021, the city had 413 gun violence victims and 81 gun homicides. 

The resolution calls on the mayor and City Council to enact legislation to reduce gun violence and how it impacts the community. 

The resolution follows an April 2021 edict by the Biden administration which called on the U.S. Department of Justice to make rule changes intended to reduce gun violence to “address the gun violence public health epidemic.”
