HUDSON VALLEY, N.Y. -- When organizations caring for those in need face winter storms, finding ways to help their clients is the top priority.

Assisted living organizations such as Promenade at Middletown discourage seniors from going out in the cold and offer tips for inclement weather, including consistently checking heating levels inside. They also assist residents with grocery shopping.

The food delivery program Meals on Wheels of Greater Newburgh follows the city school closing system. So if students are off, volunteers are off as well. According to the local Meals on Wheels Executive Director, Robin Bello, organization leaders make it a point to plan ahead for bad weather. Meals on Wheels provides extra frozen meals for clients ahead of time to keep on-hand for emergencies..

"Each meal client receives a box. There are non-perishable foods in the box. And there's enough for approximately 6 meals. So everybody receives a box and a frozen meal to keep for the winter time," said Bello.
