This Presidents' Day, a special honor and a way to learn the history of our nation's first commander-in-chief.

George Washington's Headquarters in Newburgh was open to the public Monday. Re-enactors demonstrated some of the uniforms and weapons soldiers used in the fight for American independence. Headquarters Historic Site Manager Elyse Goldberg says the first president stayed in the city for almost a year and a half during the Revolutionary War.

"Being that Washington was here the longest of all of his headquarters at the end of the war, it's Newburgh's history. It has been here since 1850 as a historic site. It is the history of Newburgh; Newburgh needs to be really proud of what was done here," Goldberg said.

According to headquarters officials, this is where Washington said no to the idea of an American monarchy.
