LOUISVILLE, Ky. — School districts are rolling back on the reopening. Bullitt and Meade Counties move to virtual learning. Fayette County schools won't go back to in-person classes for the rest of the semester. Jefferson County schools announced Friday fall sports are on pause. Of course, that impacts football. The already-shortened season and the stormy weather above the most recent Friday night lights matched the mood of some parents.

"I think they could have just said you know, 'numbers may be high but let 'em just finish the season,'" said parent Candice Gant. "They've played this long, let 'em finish...and I understand, you know. I do. I get it. But, they have to think about the kids and what this means to them," the mother of one high school senior star football player, Derrik Gant, remarked.

Next week's game is postponed. After that, it's unknown whether teams will play the last regular game of the season. Practice is still allowed. So is post-season play for other fall sports.

"It came down to conversations with KHSAA (Kentucky High School Athletic Association). Most of them are actually, the competitions, are here in town. So we felt we could do this responsibly and allow the kids to finish up with one week to go," JCPS Superintendent Dr. Marty Pollio said Friday.

Jefferson County is considered a "red" county on the health department's map. It means there are at least 25 cases per 100,000 people. As of Thursday, it shows 30.9. That's the guidance Pollio says he's going by.

Gant says sports are important too. She's hoping her son will be able to play after high school in college next year. "This is actually, his senior year has been a drastic change for him. And being able to step on that field, it means a lot to him. And it gives him a reason to want to go to school," Gant adds.
