BEREA, Ky. — The Berea Fire Department is not letting COVID-19 take away from its annual fundraiser. The department is hosting a fundraiser to help a family in their community who is battling breast cancer raise money.

The shirts the fire department is selling say “Breast cancer..still worse than 2020." Brent Billings, the public information officer for Berea Fire Department, says that they want the shirts to be a reminder of this year, but to also put in perspective how hard battling breast cancer can be.

“No matter what’s going on, this cause is still not as bad as what it could be. It’s a little play on how 2020 is going, but it kinda makes you take a step back and put it in perspective,” Billings said.

A portion of the money raised will go to a community member in Berea who is currently battling breast cancer. The rest of the money will go to the fire department's annual Christmas toy drive for children.

“All the money stays right here in Berea, so it’s a great fundraiser and a great way to get the money out there,” Billings said.

Both short sleeve and long sleeve shirts are available. The shirts range from $15 to $18 and can be ordered on their website.

“Berea is a tight-knit community. It's very different from any other community that I've ever seen or witnessed or heard about. So, we all band together during this time to do something good, positive with everything that's going on in Louisville right now,” Billings said.

The fire department is now accepting online orders and will have them available for pick up starting Oct. 1. There will be a tent up for community members to drive through and pick up the shirts in the parking lot between city hall and the clerk's office at 212 Chestnut St. Berea, Ky. 40403.
