LOUISVILLE, Ky. UofL Athletics announced its 2021 football promotional calendar, which features an array of special events, tributes, and the celebration of former head coach Howard Schnellenberger.

What You Need To Know

  • UofL Athletics released its plans for theme nights at Cardinal Stadium home games this season

  • Tribute nights include a 9/11 Remembrance and a Salute to Service on Memorial Day weekend

  • The season finale vs. Kentucky will honor the life of former head coach Howard Schnellenberger, who passed away in March

Tribute nights this season will include a 9/11 Remembrance, Extra Yard for Teachers and a Salute to Service on Memorial Day weekend. Kids Day, Band Day and a special Blackout night are also on the calendar.

The Cards will remember the career of Schnellenberger, who passed away on March 27, 2021. The former head coach led the Cardinals for 10 seasons (1985-94) and guided the program to a pair of bowl wins.

Louisville defeated No. 25 Alabama 34–7 in the 1991 Fiesta Bowl, capping a 10–1–1 season and the school's then-highest appearance in the final AP poll (14th). The Fiesta Bowl appearance was the school's first-ever New Year's Day bowl game.

Players will wear a helmet sticker for the entire season to commemorate Schnellenberger's accomplishments, and the season opener versus Eastern Kentucky will feature a moment of silence and a video tribute to the former head coach, UofL Athletics said in an email to Spectrum News 1.

Plans for a larger celebration at the Kentucky game will include an appearance from Beverlee Schnellenberger, the wife of the former UofL coach, and the presentation of the Howard Schnellenberger Award, which is given to the Most Valuable Player from either a UK or UofL player.
