MILWAUKEE — A month-long food drive culminated Tuesday with the distribution of 150 food boxes for community members in Milwaukee’s South Side neighborhood.

Milwaukee Police Department’s District Two partnered with God Touch Milwaukee, a faith-based organization, to make this a reality.

“To serve the community, that’s what we’re here to do and to be a blessing to the community,” said Pastor Marty Calderon. “To be able to give and interact with people in our community, that’s what we’re all about.”

Cars lined up on West Lincoln Ave, waiting their turn to get a food crate. Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, volunteers were masked and families stayed inside their vehicles when receiving food.

“My number one hope is that they know they’re loved, especially by people who don’t even know them,” said Captain David Salazar. “This is just one of those things you want to do from the bottom of your heart and right now as a nation, we’re hurting.”

The food drive comes during the holiday season when many still find themselves struggling to make ends meet due to the pandemic.

The boxes were also filled with masks and hand sanitizer.
