OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. -- A hotly-contested Congressional race is now down to two.

  • Wayne Liebnitzky (R) is running for District 9 congressional seat
  • He will face Darren Soto (D) in November

Last week, Darren Soto won the Democratic nomination for Florida's 9th Congressional District. Now he's preparing to face his Republican opponent, Wayne Liebnitzky.

Liebnitzky served in the U.S. Navy back in the 70s. He lives in St. Cloud where he runs a MAC tool franchise, and on his time off he paints.

Liebnitzky calls himself a veteran with a voice.

"You can't go wrong. You cannot go wrong. I do not like complacency, I am always cautious about that," Liebnitzky said. "So I can assure you every single day, you're not going to find a finer servant than myself."

This is the second time Liebnitzky has run against Soto for the same position.

Soto is an Orlando attorney who lives in Celebration and loves playing music. Voters elected Soto to congress in 2016, beating Liebnitzky.

"As the only elected Hispanic democrat in congress, not only from Florida but the entire southeast," Soto said. "It's been a big responsibility but when crisis have come, I have been there to help lead."

Liebnitzky said in his platform he's focusing on health care and jobs. He also wants to make sure he represents everyone.

"There's 27 representatives from Florida that are up at the federal level to represent us and of course and the country as well," Liebnitzky said. "Certainly Florida we have to learn to get along and agree and come to a consensus that we can all help each other out."

Soto, a former state Senator has different priorities in mind.

"Think of I-4, we need to go beyond that for our growing region. We need to be able to connect SunRail and Brightline to have greater connectivity among our high-speed railroad around here," Soto said. "And of course we have huge projects -- that we're trying to protect the everglade in our environment, so it's going to take an investment in the future and also to protect medicare, social security and medicaid."

The general election is November 6.
