ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A Rochester man is among 16 people from the U.S. and Canada to receive a Carnegie Medal.

Darnell Wilson was honored for what happened during an incident with a gunman who entered People's Choice Kitchen in December 2019.

The restaurant's owner, Evangela Stanley, says a person with a gun rushed the front door. She says Wilson, who was inside the restaurant, fought with the gunman, punching and kicking him until the two fell through the front window onto the sidewalk.

Wilson and another restaurant employee held the suspect until he ran from the scene. Police say the gunman was later arrested and charged.

The medal is given to people who enter extreme danger to save or attempt to save the lives of others.

Wilson received a financial grant for his bravery.
