AUSTIN, Texas -- School may be out for the summer but state lawmakers will soon begin looking into ways to better protect Texas students.

that killed 10 people nearly three weeks ago.

The shooting led Gov. Abbott to release a 40-page school safety plan urging lawmakers to study ways to limit school shootings and increase protections before students return in August. Monday, a newly formed Senate committee will begin looking at ways to harden schools including limiting access points and improving screening.

Then later this month, a House committee is set to look at "red flag" laws which allow for the temporary removal of firearms from someone who poses an immediate danger.

But lawmakers aren't the only ones looking into ways to better protect Texas schools. Round Rock Police Chief Allen Banks has been working with local leaders to establish a district police department.

“I felt it was best for the ISD to have its own agency to answer to the superintendent alone,” Banks said on Capital Tonight Wednesday.

Currently Round Rock ISD contracts out with three different departments to provide officers in schools. Banks was part of Gov. Abbott’s first roundtable discussion on school safety.
