SAN ANTONIO – Hundreds of cities, including San Antonio, are holding vigils to protest conditions that refugees are facing in detention centers across the country.

  • Scheduled for Friday night
  • Takes place at 7 p.m.
  • Located in Travis Park

Organizers of Friday's Lights For Liberty vigil wanted to get involved, and be a part of something that educates, informs, and helps with the conditions at migrant detention centers around the country.

"We are putting ourselves in the shoes of those that are struggling and it hurts, it personally hurts us inside." -- organizer Vianca Vargas.

Vargas is one of four women who have joined forces to acquire permits, secure speakers and entertainment, and put out the proverbial fires that come with putting on an event like this.

Anya Wimberly said all of the extra hours are worth it.

"So many people asking like, ‘What do we do?’  At this point, you know what's going on.  This is something you can do.  You can come together and be a voice and join and shine a light on what's happening and let people know it's not OK."

The Lights for Liberty event will take place this Friday from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m.  If you'd like more information, visit the Lights For Liberty Facebook page.
