SAN ANTONIO – Five hundred roofs down, and an endless number of roofs to go.

  • Under 1 Roof Program created in 2016
  • Just completed its 500th roof
  • Roofs are high-efficiency

The Under 1 Roof Program was created by San Antonio councilman Juan Trevino in 2016 and hit the milestone on Tuesday on the city's west side. Ramona Gutierrez was the recipient of roof number 500, and is ecstatic to have a potential problem taken care of, without having to spend a dime.

"As a senior citizen with a fixed income, I don't have to move away from my house, I can just stay in my house, and that's what I love about it," said Gutierrez.

The high-efficiency roofs reduce energy bills, have decreased in-home temperatures by up to 23 degrees and address life safety issues thus creating healthy outcomes for homeowners. Gutierrez feels lucky have received a new roof, but wishes others would apply as well.

"They think that they have to pay back the government, but no you don't. It's just money that they have for us that helps us out, you know,” said Gutierrez.

Under One Roof is a no-cost program open to homeowners who qualify due to income status, are 62 years of age or older, differently-able, or a veteran.
