Sidney Richardson, 48, was visiting relatives at their home on Marvy Street in Tampa when authorities say he threatened a teenage cousin with a machete. After ignoring commands to drop the weapon, police fatally shot him.

Richardson’s sister says he had planned to get help and was scheduled to meet with someone today. She also says authorities knew he suffered from mental illness.

"I was troubled by the fact that it happened, that it happened around my family and I couldn't understand why they had to take him out," said Angela Bolden, Richardson's sister.

Tampa Police and the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said they have no record of contact with Richardson.

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave.
