PLANT CITY, Fla. — A 33-year-old man was arrested and charged overnight after authorities said he slammed into a K9 deputy's cruiser on Interstate 4.

Officials said Joseph Roberts was driving a blue 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt SS just before 1:30 a.m. on westbound I-4 near the Alexander Street exit in Plant City when he struck the back of the deputy's cruiser.

The vehicle sustained significant front end damage, consistent with the collision with the deputy’s vehicle. The deputy was not injured.

When stopped, Roberts initially told authorities he was cut off by an SUV, causing him to caused him to maneuver and strike the cruiser.

Officials determined Roberts had a suspended license and an active violation of probation warrant for grand theft in Pinellas County.

Roberts requested to be transported to the hospital for evaluation. He was later arrested.
