FORT MEADE, Fla. — Polk deputies arrested a Fort Meade man on Tuesday on a manslaughter charge for punching a victim at a bar who later died from head injuries, according to an arrest report.

  • Man re-arrested for manslaughter after punching a man in a bar
  • Victim died after five days in the hospital
  • Polk County Sheriff comments on the case

"When you hit somebody, you take on that responsibility," said Sheriff Grady Judd. "He took on the responsibility of manslaughter by hitting a person and why would you do that?"

Sheriff Judd said there was no apparent reason for Shane Barrington, 35, to sucker punch William Forrester, 54, at the Bowling Green Bar on June 22.

Barrington was arrested that day on a battery charge and was released from jail after posting a $15,000 bond.

"There's no fight, there's no argument, there's no relationship," said Judd. "The witnesses at the bar said simply that Mr. Forrester showed up to bring food to a friend and this guy sucker punches him."

Forrester was immediately knocked unconscious and struck his head hard on the floor.

Forrester was transported to a Lakeland hospital where he died five days later from a brain bleed, according to an autopsy report.

The only statement Barrington made to deputies about the incident was, "I knocked him the f--k out, you don't know the whole story."

"He didn't provide us any story," said Judd. "This 54-year-old man shouldn't be dead except for the felonious actions of this [Barrington] individual."

Forrester's family declined a request for an interview.

Barrington was re-arrested on the manslaughter charge on Tuesday and is being held in the Polk jail without a bond.
