ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating who is responsible for mutilating a gator found floating in a St. Petersburg waterway on Wednesday.

The gator was reportedly found floating in the water near the Tom Stuart Causeway. Its head and tail had been removed.

It's illegal in the state of Florida to intentionally kill a alligator or possess alligator parts, including the head, without proper permits, according to FWC.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the FWC Wildlife Alert Hotline at 1-888-404-3922. Callers can remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward.
