WASHINGTON, D.C. -- It is one of the most anticipated hearings on Capitol Hill in years. Former special counsel Robert Mueller is scheduled to testify Wednesday, facing public questioning for the first time since wrapping up his investigation.

  • Democrats are expected to ask Mueller about the potential cases of obstruction of justice outlined in the report.
  • They also want to know more about any potential Russia connections.
  • Some Democrats see the testimony as a chance to build the case for impeachment.

Some Democrats see the testimony as a chance to build the case for impeachment.

No North Carolina lawmakers are on the two House panels that are scheduled to do the questioning.

In an interview, Rep. David Price, D-4th District, reined in expectations ahead of Mueller’s testimony.

“He’s not going to be providing a whole lot of new information,” Price said. “He’s not going to be telling us what those redacted portions say - we have to find that out in other ways, and we should find that out.”

Price says he hopes the testimony will help set the record straight about the special counsel’s findings - clearing up any confusion caused by a letter from the Attorney General that was released before the redacted report was made public.

“What Mr. Mueller can do, I think, is help us interpret what he’s found and draw the conclusions,” Price said.

Across the aisle, Republicans are expected to ask Mueller about the origins of the Russia investigation. North Carolina Republican lawmakers say they are eager to move on and put the special counsel probe behind them.

“I think what we’re going to see is Mr. Mueller staying within the four corners of the report,” said Sen. Thom Tillis, R-NC.

“Let’s get on to the real business of the nation,” said Rep. Ted Budd, R-13th District. “I think the folks back home - the folks in the 13th District of North Carolina - are saying can you get on the other side of this, and we certainly would like to.”

Mueller is scheduled to testify Wednesday before both the House Judiciary Committee and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.
